Researched Blog

In today’s society, plastic surgery has become very common and is no longer viewed as a “big deal”. A lot of this comes from people who are always watching those plastic surgery shows. You know, ones like The Swan, I Want a Famous Face, Dr. 90210, and Extreme Makeover. Majority of Americans have viewed at least one of these shows, and I’ll admit, they’re very interesting and can be addicting to watch. However, people think that this gives them all the information they need to know about cosmetic surgery and then look into it, and have a procedure done. “These shows may create unrealistic, unhealthy expectations about what plastic surgery can do for you. Although its called reality TV, it may not be reality.Surgery has become more affordable and seen as a “quick fix” for most people.

The media will produce images that will make many people do almost anything to fit the “American standard” as far as beauty and perfection is concerned. There’s nothing wrong with having cosmetic surgery done for the right reasons, but no one should go and do it “just because”. It’s something that needs to be thought out, taken seriously, and have the right doctor chosen for the job. Everyone sees celebrities having it done all the time and majority of the time looking even better than they did before; of course there’s a few exceptions such as Michael Jackson and Jocelyn Wildenstein, who became famous from having too many procedures done.

I’ll be honest though, I’m a very avid viewer of all the cosmetic surgery shows they put on the air, but it doesn’t necessarily make me want to go have surgery done.  I would like to make some changes with my appearance, and I’ll be the first to admit, yes, the media is a HUGE influence on society.  However, I think that people should make decisions such as surgery, for the right reasons, and not because the media or reality TV shows pretty much say you should.  The cosmetic surgery shows on air tend to be addicting to watch and become very interesting, the best part to watch is the new transformations at the end of each episode, and I think that this is where people get the idea that it’s a great thing to just go out and do.

Plastic surgery has become so well known and so popular, it’s almost ridiculous the way this trend is happening. It only used to be celebrities and upper class people having these procedures done, because it’s a very expensive luxury, well it used to be anyway.  Now, everyone is getting plastic surgery, including the average, middle class, working mom and believe it or not even teenagers. (I personally know someone, my age, that had breast implants put in, in our senior year of high school.) It’s no longer a big deal when you hear of someone having a procedure done, especially with celebrities. It’s actually becoming more common to hear of people getting plastic surgery done than it is not to.

I think that the producers and creators of these shows  need to provide viewers with all of the information on the procedures that really occur.  They should be left knowing the risks, issues and future problems cosmetic surgery can actually cause for them. If this was done from the beginning I don’t think plastic surgery would be as common as it has recently become.  But would people still enjoy it just as much? No, probably not.  It becomes for informative and less entertaining to viewers; however it may discourage some viewers from going out and having plastic surgery.  Until everyone can accept the fact that everyone is different and that’s how it should be, we will always remain with the desire to look “normal”.

Blog For English

The topic of my paper is the influence of plastic surgery television shows.  It’s a growing issue that’s not getting any better or being helped.  It has been surveyed and researched that 4 out of every 5 people who undergo a cosmetic procedure admitted to be influenced by plastic surgery TV shows such as; The Swan, I Want a Famous Face, Extreme Makeover, and Dr. 90210.  The producers and/or creators of these kinds of shows fail to include the risks and complications in their shows that people may run into when undergoing plastic surgery.  Most of the avid viewers of these shows feel increasingly knowledgeable about plastic surgery after watching these shows and see that they are simple procedures with  no risks and go out to have them done on themselves.

Thesis-   Plastic surgery has become much better known and more popular with today’s society however, this comes from the influence of reality TV shows based on cosmetic surgery.  These shows make plastic surgery appear to be risk-free and harmless to your body, when in reality there is a lot more behind these procedures than what is being displayed.

Key Quotes-

Dr. John Persing, MD, ASPS Member Surgeon and study co-author said,  “It is unfortunate that patients are turning toward the entertainment industry  for educational information- we had hoped for different results.  These shows may create unrealistic, unhealthy expectations about what plastic surgery can do for you.  Although it’s called reality TV, it may not be reality.”

Kathleen Dohney said, “Overall, four out of every five patients said TV had influenced them to seek out cosmetic surgery.  Nearly a third said they felt that the shows had “very much” or “moderately” influenced their views on plastic surgery”.

Sander Gilman, and Emory University professor said, “By the year 2020, nobody will ask if you’ve had aesthetic surgery, they will ask why you have not had plastic surgery.  Today, he says, it has become normal to be around people who opt to change their looks.  But soon, the question will become, “Why are you walking around bald, fat or flat chested?”

Richard D’Amico, MD says, “Reality shows may provide inaccurate or unhealthy information to viewers (for example, showcasing multiple plastic surgeries or more rapid weight loss than most experts would recommend).  It is one thing to inspire and provide encouragement, yet another to foster the unrealistic expectations implied by many (reality) TV shows…”

Second To Last Blog!!!

I have high expectations for myself and the way I would really like for this final project to work out. I plan to put a lot of time into it and make it exactly how I want it. I really liked the slide show examples Kim gave us to look at in class and I think that they will help us with this project. I especially liked the one about all the blond anchors in the different news casts. It provided a lot of information, yet not too much. It also included some humor and interesting pictures that I found made it easier to hold my attention throughout the whole slide show. I hope to have something successful like this slide I saw. I want it to be interesting and eye catching to the viewers. I don’t want people to be bored with it so I’m going to try to get good/interesting pictures and possibly even a video. Also, I’m going to provide a lot of interesting information but not over do it.

I would explain my argument pretty much like this:

Plastic surgery TV shows are a lot more influential on its viewers than most people may think.  It has been researched and surveyed that majority of people who undergo cosmetic surgery admit that they are influenced by these TV shows; ones such as, The Swan, I Want a Famous Face, Extreme Makeover, and Dr. 90210. The producers and/or creators of these kinds of shows fail to include the risks and complications in their shows that people may run into when undergoing plastic surgery.  It’s becoming a real issue that people aren’t really taking notice of, or doing anything about.

Pictures I’d like to possibly include in my slide show:

  • before and after photos
  • cosmetic surgery gone wrong
  • statistic  charts
  • pictures comparing one surgery to another
  • procedure being done

“F:F:F is open there, and she flips back and forth between posts, getting a sense of what’s been going on. Not much, aside from ongoing analysis of #135, which is normal, and discussion of this Vatican story from Brazil. Maurice, interestingly, posts to point out that both the story and the alleged papel interest seem to issue from Brazil, and that there has apparently been no independent confirmation from elsewhere. Is it true? he wonders. A hoax?” (90).

This passage basically states that Cayce is addicted to this forum and is constantly looking at it to see what’s going on.  She has interest in another country, Brazil and makes posts about the stories on it to possibly learn more about it.

This passage makes me think of Facebook.   It has wall posts and status’ that people can put their personal information on and let others know how they’re feeling.  I’m an avid user of Facebook and I’ll admit, I refresh my page every once in a while to see the changes on others’ statuses and too see if I received a new message or post.  It’s a very addicting website. It’s different from this passage though because it talks about finding out stories from other countries, and on Facebook it’s really just used as a way of communication between friends and a way to meet new people.

“She thinks: People smoke, and drink as though it were good for you, and seem to still be in some sort of honeymoon phase with cocaine.  Herion, she’s read, is cheaper here than it’s ever been, the market still glutted by the initial dumping of Afghani opium supplies.  Done with her toes, she changes to heels, craning her neck to be certain her feet are correctly aligned.  She likes Pilates because it isn’t, in the way she thinks of yoga, meditative.  You have to keep your eyes open, here, and pay attention.” (Gibson, 6)

Words, terms & ideas….

“people smoke, and drink as though it were good for you” : this fact stands out to me beacuse once you read it, you realize how true this statement is and how much people actually enjoy doing something like this that’s unhealthy for you.

“it seems to be in some sort of honeymoon phase with cocaine” – This quote was very interesting to me because it makes sense in some ways but yet i don’t completely understand what is meant by it.  I think it mostly stood out because the use of the word cocaine.

“herion, she’s read, seems to be cheaper here than it’s ever been”- This phrase was something i immediately noticed, I think mostly due to the fact it has the word herion in it. Though I’m not yet sure how this plays into the story.

“she likes pilates”- This kind of gives you a sense of who the character is and gives you a hobby she enjoys.  It’s too early in the story to tell how she is but it does help to give readers a better idea.

“meditative”- This is another word that stood out to me when they were talking about the character.  Once again, it kind of gives you a sense of who the charater is, and gives the reader more to think about.

“cocaine” - This word seems like it would stand out to anyone who is reading it.  Its a harmful drug you hear alot about and I think it’s catchy to the readers.  I don’t think it really ties into the story, at least not yet; its too early to tell.

”herion” – This is another word that I feel would stand out to any reader, just knowing what it is.  Once again I’m not too sure what the significance to the story this may be but it may reveal as the story continues.

Most Interesting:

“people smoke and drink as though it were good for you”- This suggests to me that this character  isn;t really into the whole smoking and drinking scene beacuse the way this is stated; she says it as though she was looking down upon it.  This statement makes it seem like this character is innocent and may be cautious about her health habits.

“she likes pilates”- This suggests to me that this character cares about her body and enjoys doing exercises and things to improve her image.  This may have been a statement the author wanted to make to allow the reader to think more positively of the character.

“herion, she’s read, seems to be cheaper here than it’s ever been”- This statement leads me to believe that drugs are in the culture where this character lives.  This is not the first time a drug has been mentioned, and that’s just in the passage I chose. This also makes me think that this may be a theme throughout this story and be affective in this character’s life.

The quote that most closely relates with my wiki on American Idol is; “The obvious but hard-to-grasp truth is that living with the media is today one of the main things American and many other human beings do.”  (Gitlin 5) This quote offers new ideas and meaning to the wiki we wrote.  It reveals that the media and digital technology is involved or linked to everyone in one way or another.  People call in their votes of who they liked the best from that night and are even using their Ceil phones to text their votes into the show.  It’s just something that has become so popular and so well known that no one really stops to think about how our society is so drastically changing.  You have people that are addicts to shows such as these and will do anything to be sure they see every episode including, taping it, dvr, downloading, searching on the web…which all of these require today’s newer technology.

I enjoyed my experience with the collective and collaborative writing. I found it to be very effective and i think it made for a better wiki to be created.  We all had different ideas and views on this topic and this allowed us to expand on our ideas and facts we each come up with.  I think that collective intelligence and collaborative writing is a good technique and allowed us to come up with a great wiki.

The quote i chose to use is  ”The obvious but hard-to-grasp truth is that living with the media is today one of the main things American and many other human beings do.”  (Gitlin 5)  This pretty much just states that the American culture revolves around the media and has a serious addiction to it.  This causes people to become very influenced by what they see on various different aspects of thje media.  This relates to my topic of Reality shows based on cosmetic and plastic suregery and how it effects women in many ways.  It shows that the media is really what people base their lives on and allow it to greatly influence their lives.  People will go through drastic measures to meet the “ideal person” that the media portrays.  It offers my topic the idea that if the media wasnt so strongly influencing or effective then maybe all of these women wouldnt be applying to take part in these shows or go out on their own to improve their appearances.

Part II- “In Todd Gitlin’s “Media Unlimited” he has many opinions on the media and how it affects our society. Most of them i can agree with and relate to. One that I do agree with is the fact that we can’t detach ourselves from the media. No matter what we do we are in some way connected with it and its pretty much impossible to avoid.”

I like the point I made in this blog. It’s extremely true and has been supported by many of the different books and articles we have read and reviewed in class. This particular text that we read I found most valid and all of his ideas were supported with facts.

“Today in class we learned how to make our own wiki’s. We created, edited, and were edited on our own work. This was a very different experience and i found it to be very interesting. ‘ Creating our own wikis was a fun and new experience. It kind of gave us the idea of what it is to create, maintain and update a website. It added to our knowledge about the digital wild and what its like to be behind the scenes. “

Johnson’s way of thinking made me realize how playing this game actually affected me more than just my frustration in trying to figure out the defeat for the game. On page 40 he talks about collateral learning. This game forced me to make decisions and put my actions in order.”

Playing a video game in class actually turned out to be effective. Hapland cleared up a lot of Johnson’s ideas and made it clearer for me to understand. I think by doing more “hands on” things in the classroom it will improve the understanding of certain topics.

“I want my argument to be Society’s addiction to the media. I think that everyone in some way is connected to it and most become very addicted; whether it is to watching the news on a daily basis or being glued to the computer 24/7.”

Society’s addiction to the media is almost getting out of control. People revolve their lives around things such as TV, internet and cell phones. It just makes you think about how life would be today if we didn’t have this kind of technology.

“My group was very helpful in finding all the needed information to answer each question. Everyone used their books and knowledge about it and found different parts of each question to complete the assignment. Each person put in their own ideas and everyone else would just build on what someone said and as a group we were able to complete each question easily. “

I think group work in class is a really good method in helping each of us learn. Everyone gets a chance to share their ideas and critique or influence others. I can personally say that it helps me and I’m sure it does with my other peers as well. I like the fact we can each do a small part of the assignment then put all ours ideas together and still completely understand.

“Participation” Comparing With Jenkins

In our free write from Thursday we had to use one or all of four words including participation, information, collaboration and reliability.  I used a form of participation by saying, “We all participated in creating this and then we finally published the page when it was done.”   Jenkins uses this word on page 3 stating; This circulation of media content-across different media systems, competiting media economies, and national borders-depends heavily on consumers’ active participation.” Our quotes are related only in the way we used participation. We both state the participation of others and resulting in success from all those who helped.  Participation in almost anything is necessary to be a success in what is trying to be achieved.

In Thursday’s class we had a group assignment in finding out information about a certain topic and reviwing others’ blog posts to help us.  We all had to participate to be successful in our work. Participation from each group member is key in getting everything we need to create a successful wiki.  The participation from each person was definitley a success in our group, we all worked together and accomplished what had to be done.
